(NEXSTAR) – Coldplay frontman Chris Martin fell into a trapdoor during a concert in Australia on Sunday, momentarily drawing concerned gasps from onlookers in the venue.
Martin, 47, had been speaking to the crowd at Marvel Stadium just outside of Melbourne when he backed into the open space, video shared to social media shows. A pair of hands presumably belonging to a stagehand could be seen extending out of the hole just before Martin fell backward and landed on what looked to be the stagehand and another crew member.
“That’s, uh, not planned,” Martin, still holding the microphone, told the audience immediately after recovering from the fall.
“Thank you for catching me,” he appeared to tell the crew members underneath the stage. “Thank you guys. Holy s---.”
Martin did not appear injured.
Martin’s fall comes only weeks after Olivia Rodrigo fell through a door on the stage during a performance at the nearby Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
Rodrigo, 21, had been running across the stage when she fell, but she quickly reappeared and assured fans she was OK.
Speaking later with Jimmy Fallon about the incident, she confirmed she was examined for signs of a concussion at a hospital after the show.
“Watching the video back, it’s pretty terrifying,” she told Fallon. But she added that “[the] show must go on.”
“That’s showbiz, baby,” she joked.
Coldplay is on the Australian leg of their Music of the Spheres world tour, with several stops scheduled in Sydney and Auckland (each) through mid-November.
